Invasive Species and Native Plants

Native plant is a term to describe plants endemic or naturalized to a given area in geologic time. This includes plants that have developed, occur naturally, or existed for many years in an area. In North America a plant is often deemed native if it was present before colonization. Research has found that insects depend on native plants as do the birds that feed on them.

The Conservation Commission has compiled a list of native plants.  This list shows the perfect planting location and environment for each plant group.  The websites from which this information was compiled are listed for you to get further information on the various projects promoting native plantings in our state.
