Frank Sergiovanni, Ridgefield Golf Pro and General Manager

Frank Sergiovanni

Frank Sergiovanni was a local boy who lived on Round Lake Road and graduated from Ridgefield High School in 1979. He had no interest in golf while in high school. Frank never even caddied. He played soccer in high school and rugby in college.

After high school Frank went on to Villanova University and majored in communications. While waiting to get a career type job, Frank worked at the Ridgefield Golf Course. He enjoyed working there but left to work on Wall Street when the opportunity came about.

After a few years on Wall Street, Frank found that he was happier working at the golf course than working in finance and his life took a turn around. Frank then worked hard and became a golf pro in 1985. Four years later, Frank received his PGA status. Frank started small as a golf director for the Highlander Golf Academy in Wintergreen, Virginia and at Sailfish Point in Stuart, Florida.

Later, Frank went on to become an assistant pro first at Waccabuc Country Club in South Salem, then at the Bedford Golf and Tennis Club in Bedford, NY, and after that the Fairfield Country Club in Fairfield, CT. Today one of his favorite spots to play for pleasure is at the Fairfield Country Club.

In 2001, Frank joined the Ridgefield Golf club as the Club Pro and General Manager. The Ridgefield Golf Club was originally known as the Dlhy Ridgefield Golf Course as the Dlhy family donated part of their orchard in order to develop a course. The club opened in 1975 and is so much different today than it was in the beginning. Each year new improvements to the club have been made. The club is always in transition making it a very popular destination in our area.

The Ridgefield Golf Club was designed by the well-known Fazio Family that were the architects for over 200 golf courses around the country, with 48 of them known as prize winning courses. The Fazio’s like to make sand traps that are in interesting shapes. Some of the Fazio’s well known golf courses are in:  Jupiter, Florida, Myrtle Beach, S.C., Limerick, Ireland, Ontario, Canada, Carmel, California, Palm Beach, Florida, and Scottsdale, Arizona.

The Fazio family liked designing Ridgefield’s course with its rolling hills, tree lined fairways, great views, and ponds. The course is proud of its status of 6,444 yards, par 71, slope of 123, challenging back nine, bent grass on the greens and blue grass on the fairways. The Ridgefield High School golf team is very fortunate to have such a beautifully designed golf course on which to practice.

Now with thirty-five years of golf instruction under his belt, Frank Sergiovanni offers private, semiprivate, and group lessons at the Ridgefield Golf Course. He also offers video analysis of golf strokes and competitive coaching to people of all ages. As director of the Ridgefield Golf Club Frank is also responsible for the infrastructure of the club, budgetary items, staffing, scheduling, related aspects of the club such as pro and cart shop, driving range, putting green, refreshment and deck area, and the greens development and maintenance with greens keeper, Anton Steger.

Today the Ridgefield Golf Club is a public golf course with around 1400 members, about seventy percent being Ridgefield residents and thirty percent residents from other towns.  Platinum, gold and silver memberships are available with special privileges such as tee times. There are also four different tee off lengths from which golfers can choose. Then too, the club boasts special carts for handicapped golfers, a greenhorn league for people new to the sport and groups organized by ability and age levels. There is also a family hour usually after 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday and a junior golf camp. There is something for everyone at the Ridgefield Golf Club.

Frank very much enjoys his work at the Ridgefield Golf Course. He no longer lives in Ridgefield, but in Danbury and has two grown children. In his spare time Frank enjoys art, especially art history and appreciation. He also likes to cook. Pies are his specialty along with the good cooking that he learned at home. Although Frank was not brought up on golf as a young child, he has successfully made golf into a career in which he has found much satisfaction.
