Ridgefield Police Department What To Do If A Police Officer Stops You On The Street:
1. Be forthright in your responses. Officers may be investigating a suspicious incident and have only a minimal description of the person involved. 2. Cooperate as much as possible. Most of the time, the Officer will question you for only a short time. 3. Remember that you may simply be in the area of a reported crime or you may resemble the initial description given to the Officer. What To Do If A Police Officer Comes To Your Door:
- Usually, if an Officer knocks on your door it is to interview you or a
member of your household as a witness to an incident being investigated. Sometimes, they may be there to make notification or to serve a Warrant.
- When serving a Warrant, Officers will try to identify themselves. They
may dispense with this if an emergency or exigent circumstance exists.
- If an Officer is serving an Arrest Warrant, they do not have to have a copy
of the Warrant in their possession to make an arrest. You must comply with the Warrant.
- If an Officer is executing a Search Warrant, they will provide a copy of the
Warrant to the resident.
- Police may conduct a search without a Warrant under certain
circumstances.
